The Municipal Library of Odorheiu-Secuiesc

The Municipal Library of Odorheiu-Secuiesc was founded in 1951 as a spiritual heritage of a distant past. Based on the existing documents the beginnings of the library can be traced back to the 15th century.

The Dominican Monastery must have owned a collection of books needed for religious purposes and also for the education of monks. In the 16th century the Jesuits undoubtedly had a library as well. The most valuable part of the Public Library is the Academic Library, the former library of the Reformed College, founded in 1670, which takes pride in its 77,000 volumes, 8,300 of which are antique books.

During the second part of the 19th century free libraries of civil nature appeared in the town, for instance, the Civil Reading Circle (1892), Women’s Association (1875) and so on. All of these organizations served the community.

The first real home of the library was the Cultural Centre (1958-1988). Due to lack of space the library moved into a former bank building in Kossuth Street. Faced with several challenges like proprietary rights and growing book stock, in 1996 the town council finally decided to rebuild the one-time "Szabó Károly" restaurant to give home to the library.

Since February 15th 2001 the region’s most modern library awaits its readers in Odorheiu-Secuiesc.
